- From 醬/酱 (chiùⁿ, “viscous or thick liquid”) + 泔 (ám, “starch taken from cooked rice”), according to Manuel (1948).[1]
- From 煮 (chú, “to cook”) + 泔 (ám, “rice broth”), according to Chan-Yap (1980).[2]
