Etymology[edit]
A merger of two related verbs: Old Norse velta (intransitive, strong conjugation), from Proto-Germanic *weltaną. 2. Old Norse velta (transitive, weak conjugation), from Proto-Germanic *waltijaną, cognate with German wälzen, English welt (obsolete). They are both related to the verb *waltaną in German walzen (“to waltz”) (hence Danish valse).
