From zoo- +‎ (itself from Ancient Greek ζῷον (zôion, animal)) + Ancient Greek νόσος (nósos, disease) (compare also nosology); the surface analysis is almost, although not quite, zoo- +‎ -osis; compare also anthroponosis.
