From Proto-Igboid *á-ŋ-gõ̀ĩ́. Cognate with Ekpeye ɔ́ꜜgʷʊ́, Ogbah áꜜgī́, Ezaa áꜜgʊ́, Izi áꜜgʊ́, Ukwuani-Aboh-Ndoni ágʊ̌, Ika áꜜgʊ́̃.[2] Further cognates probably include Proto-Yoruboid *ɛ́-kʊ̃̀, (whence Igala ẹ́kọ̀ and Yoruba ẹkùn), and Proto-Bantu *ngòì.
