From Middle Persian swk' (sōg, burn, burning), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱewk-.

Related to سوختن (suxtan, to burn), سرخ (sorx, red), and سوگند (sowgand, oath); and also to Old Armenian սուգ (sug, grief).
