Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Classical Persian واقف (wāqif, “a knower or a benefactor”), from Arabic وَاقِف (wāqif, “standing”), from the root و ق ف (w-q-f). Compare Bengali ওয়াকেফ (ōẇakeph).
