Borrowed from Classical Persian مشعل (maš'al), from Arabic مَشْعَل (mašʕal). Cognate with Assamese মহলা (mohola), Odia ମଶାଲ (môśalô), Hindi मशाल (maśāl), Nepali मसाल् (masāl), Punjabi ਮਸਾਲ (masāl), Sindhi مَشْعَلُ (maś'alu), Marathi मशाल (maśāl), Konkani मशाल (maśāl).
