From Middle Chinese (MC kaep, “shell; armor”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨠᩣ᩠ᨷ, Lao ກາບ (kāp), Khün ᨠᩣ᩠ᨷ, ᦂᦱᧇ (k̇aab), Shan ၵၢပ်ႇ (kàap), Ahom 𑜀𑜆𑜫 (kap), Nong Zhuang gaeb.
