From Sanskrit ईश्वर (īśvara, “chief; lord; master”); probably via Old Khmer iśvara°, īśvara (“chief, lord, master; an epithet of Śiva”).
Cognate with Modern Khmer ឦស្វរៈ (ʼeisvâréaʼ), Lao ອີສວນ (ʼī sūan).
