Particularly: “There are two possible etymologies:

  1. (かた) (kata) + () (ha) + (ra, a suffix)(From Kōjien)
  2. Alteration from katahara (片腹, “side of the belly, one's sides”, from (かた) (kata) + (はら) (hara)), coming to mean “the side of something”.”

The adverb is derived from sense 5 of the noun.[1]

Usage notes[edit]

(in addition to): かたわら can be after a noun with , or a verb in its 連体形(れんたいけい) (rentaikei, attributive form). The verb after かたわら is an additional, less emphasised action or habit compared to the action before.
