Usage notes[edit]

A Kyoto-style tatami mat (京間) measures 191 by 95.5 centimeters. This size of mat is commonly used in detached houses in the Kansai region and other parts of western Japan. A Tokyo-style 江戸間, in contrast, is 176 by 88 centimeters, and is common for houses in eastern Japan. The smaller 団地間 (danchima), measuring 170 by 85 centimeters, is used throughout the country in apartments or condominiums.
