Etymology[edit]

Possibly derived from a stem *ŋaʔ (to oppose; to resist) + general noun suffix *-n; related to (OC *hŋaːnʔ, *hŋaːns, “cliff”), (OC *hŋaːʔ, “riverbank”) (Schuessler, 2007).
