Etymology[edit]

/bentau//bentɔː//bentoː/

Borrowed from Chinese 便當便当 (biàndang, convenient).

The use of for ben is an example of phonetic ateji (当て字), due to 便 having another sense of "human excrement'.

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Expand etymology, such as a short history of the bento; citation needed since it's common "knowledge" that Mandarin got the word from Japanese.”
