The "narrative music" sense is derived from 浄瑠璃姫 (Jōruri-hime), the name of a rich man's daughter from 浄瑠璃物語 (Jōruri monogatari), expanded to mean a form of music based on the ballad drama. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
