Compound of 現在 (genzai, “present, current”) + 地 (chi, “place, location”).[1]

Usage notes[edit]
A somewhat less common but still rather frequent variant or related phrase, 現在位置 (genzai ichi, “present location”) is also in use on maps serving the function of the English “you are here”.
