Etymology[edit]

As Nihonshōki states, ホムタ was a synonym to , a special leather bracelet worn by archers. No Japanese etymology was found to this word ( and are ateji). Alexander Vovin proposed a Koreanic etymology of this word which in Modern Korean would've given a word like *팔무닥, from , 묻다 and a noun-forming -악 suffix found, for example, in words like 가락, with a matching literal meaning of "arm-coverer".
