Etymology[edit]

From Old Japanese.[1][2] Derived from へだつ (hedatsu),[2] a compound of () (he, separate) + () (tatsu, to set up), where the tatsu changes to datsu as an instance of rendaku (連濁). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
