First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 냇〯ᄀᆞᇫ〯 (Yale: nǎy-s-kǒz). Analyzable as 내 (nae) +‎ ㅅ (-s-) +‎ 가 (ga).

     다리를 건널 때 나는 냇가의 나무들이 어슴푸레하게 물 속에 비쳐 있는 것을 보았다.

     Crossing the bridge, I saw trees by the streamside dimly reflected on the water.
