Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 셟〯다〮 (Yale: syělptá), seemingly from *셜 (*syel-) +‎ (-W-, adjectivizer). Compare 서럽다 (seoreopda).

From Old Korean 哀反 (*SYELp-).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈsʰɘ(ː)ɭt͈a̠]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
