From Middle Korean 심바ᇰ (Yale: sìmpàng, “priest, shaman”), but apparently contaminated by Sino-Korean (seung, Buddhist priest) due to syncretism between indigenous Korean religion and Buddhism. Doublet of 심방 (simbang).
