  1. Forms nouns from verbs. Variant of -us used with verbs of conjugation type 61 (sallia), and those verbs in types 52 (sanoa) and 53 (muistaa) whose stem consists of at most two syllables
    tutkia (to study, explore, investigate) + ‎-mus → ‎tutkimus (research, investigation)
    luottaa (to trust) + ‎-mus → ‎luottamus (trust)
  2. Forms names for people and things from stems.
    yli- (over, upper) + ‎-mus → ‎ylimys (aristocrat)
    surkea (miserable) + ‎-mus → ‎surkimus (weakling)
    pyhä (holy) + ‎-mus → ‎pyhimys (saint)
    iso (large) + ‎-mus → ‎isomus (large gold nugget)

Usage notes[edit]

When attached to verbs ending in the derivational affix -utua / -ytyä, the -tu- / -ty- is elided (e.g. sitoutua + -mussitoumus instead of sitoutumus, which may be found in older language).
