Category:Japanese nidan verbs

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This category lists verbs with the classical 二段活用 (nidan katsuyō, bigrade conjugation) pattern. These are further divided into 上二段活用 (kami nidan katsuyō, upper bigrade conjugation) with verb stems that alternate between -u and -i endings, and 下二段活用 (shimo nidan katsuyō, lower bigrade conjugation) with verb stems that alternate between -u and -e endings.

This conjugation pattern is archaic in the modern language, and has been superseded by the 一段活用 (ichidan katsuyō, monograde conjugation) pattern, with such verbs also called "ru-verbs" or "type 2 verbs".
