First attested as caswyn in 1409. Etymology uncertain. Proposed etymologies include a derivation from the plural form of Latin casa (cottage, house) or a compound of Vulgar Latin *cassanus (oak, Quercus sp.) and Middle Dutch winne (leased farmstead, farm).
