Latin[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Restructuring of Classical comedere based on conjugations such as comēs (you eat). Cf. potēre < posse.

Pronunciation[edit]

Verb[edit]

*comere (Proto-Ibero-Romance)

  1. eat

Reconstruction notes[edit]

Rhizotonic forms may have had */ˈkɔm-/, as the diphthongization expected of original */ˈɔ/ is found in Asturian.[1] In that case, diphthongization may have been counteracted in Castilian by the following /m/ (cf. hombre < hŏminem).

Descendants[edit]

  • Aragonese: comer (Jacetania, Somontanos)
  • Old Leonese: [Term?]
  • Old Galician-Portuguese: comer
    • Galician: comer
    • Portuguese: comer (see there for further descendants)
  • Old Spanish: comer
