Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Ossetic *sāgɨ, from Proto-Scythian *ṣāki, from Proto-Iranian *šākah (“something forked, having branches”).[1][2][3] Cognate with Khotanese [script needed] (śśājsano, “fork”), Sogdian 𐫢𐫀𐫄𐫍 (šʾɣh /⁠šāx⁠/, “branch”), and perhaps further to Lithuanian šakės (“forks”), if not an Iranian borrowing.
