Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hayā́mti, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂e-yḗm-ti ~ *h₂e-yem-énti, from *yem- (to take hold, restrain). Cognate with Sanskrit अयमुर् (ayamur, have stretched out).
