@Crom daba Would you be able to provide more information on what Etymology 2 means, e.g. what bǎo means or what the dice game is like? The closest I could find is 宝, as in 押宝 (“a gambling game, played with dice under a bowl”). I'm not sure it is similar to the Mongolian game, however. Wyang (talk) 22:58, 11 February 2017 (UTC)

Tsewel: Шооны нүхийг таалцан мөрийтэй наадах тоглоом ~ dice hole/cavity guessing with bets played game', a game about betting which hole the dice will fall in? Chinese etymology is from Sukhbaatar.

онх is given as a synonym which is surely the same word as Lessing's ᠣᠩᠬᠤ (oŋqu) "Anklebone of sheep and goats used for playing at anklebones" and Ramsted's Kalmyk oŋχɒ "hals über kopf, kopflings, nach unten; eine stellung des spielknochens" ~ "on its head, head-first, downward, a position of anklebone (dice)".

It probably isn't an anklebone game though, as шоо and шагай are considered different things (they don't feature in eachother's definition by Tsewel).

Hmm, they are very likely the same game.

Definition for 宝 is: "一种赌具。方形,用牛角或硬木做成,上有指示方向的记号,参加赌博的人猜测宝上所指的方向下注" (a kind of gambling device; square-shaped, made of ox horn or hardwood. There are signs on them marking directions, and gamblers guess the directions the signs are pointing to to make bets.)
