@Fumiko Take Modern Vietnamese <s-> comes from *ks < *kr < *pr, *br, *tr, *dr, *kr, *gr. This word was borrowed from Old Chinese (compare the OC pronunciation at 力#Chinese) when Vietnamese was still at Proto-Vietic stage. Other pre-Middle Chinese borrowings of the same sort include (jiāng) (giang, sông), (liên, sen). For reference, see: 漢越語研究 (1948), page 74 of the publication.
