Claimed to be derived from Khmer យក្ខ (yĕək) or related to trăn (“python”), rắn (“snake”), or even Malay macan (“tiger”) by various folk etymologies.
More likely from a descendant of Arabic جن (jinn) or جان (jānn). Compare Eastern Cham ajin, Malay jin.
