From kʰə̆- (which; interrogative prefix) +‎ jauʔ³¹ (classifier for people). The meaning expanded from “which people” to “who”, cf. dialectical Chinese 哪個哪个. Compare Lhao Vo khoyaug, Zaiwa ka yuq and Luxi Achang xai³⁵ ʑuʔ⁵¹.
