From Middle Dutch coelen, a merger of two Old Dutch verbs:
- *kuolen (“make cooler”), from Proto-West Germanic *kōlijan, from Proto-Germanic *kōlijaną.
- *kuolon (“become cooler”), from Proto-West Germanic *kōlēn.
