Borrowed from Spanish marfil (ivory), from Old Spanish almalfil, from Arabic عَظْم اَلْفِيل (ʕaẓm al-fīl, elephant-bone), from عَظْم (ʕaẓm, bone) + فِيل (fīl, elephant).
