From u (“u”) + pedol (“horseshoe”) i.e. "horseshoe(-shaped) u".

Usage notes[edit]
Used especially by those from south Wales, where both ⟨i⟩ and ⟨u⟩ are pronounced the same (as /ɪ, iː/), in order to distinguish between these letters in spelling.
