From u (“i”) + cwpan (“cup”) i.e. "cup(-shaped) u".

- (South Wales) The name of the Latin-script letter U.
Usage notes[edit]
Used especially by those from south Wales, where both ⟨i⟩ and ⟨u⟩ are pronounced the same (as /ɪ, iː/), in order to distinguish between these letters in spelling.
