From Proto-Germanic *windaną. Cognate with Old Frisian winda (West Frisian wine), Old Saxon windan (Low German winden), Dutch winden, (German winden), Old Norse vinda (Danish vinde, Swedish vinda), Gothic *𐍅𐌹𐌽𐌳𐌰𐌽 (*windan).
