Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀪𑀚𑁆𑀚𑁂𑀇 (bhajjei) (compare 𑀪𑀚𑁆𑀚𑀇 (bhajjaï)), from Sanskrit भर्जयति (bharjayati) (compare भृज्जति (bhṛjjáti)). Compare Old Marathi 𑘥𑘨𑘿𑘕𑘜𑘹 (bharjaṇe), Old Marathi 𑘥𑘨𑘕𑘜𑘹 (bharajaṇe). Cognate with Konkani भाज्चे (bhāzce) (compare Bengali ভাজা (bhaja), Assamese ভাজা (bhaza), Sylheti ꠜꠣꠎꠣ (báza)).
