The only sense listed for the entry is "to contrast", without even specifying whether the verb is transitive/intransitive. However, this sense seems to contradict a particular usage of the verb I encountered and also the entry on the Finnish wiktionary, "pitää vertailukelpoisena tai samanarvoisena jnk kanssa" ("to consider comparable to sth or of the same value as sth"), which seems to be quite the opposite of "to contrast". (This comment was added by the user MNN) So, the question is: is there any meaningful case where the word rinnastaa would translate as "to contrast"?

It's used in linguistics for the sense we currently give for transitive contrast, although it covers a wider range even in that use and would be probably better glossed as simply compare. --Tropylium (talk) 20:37, 13 August 2017 (UTC)

@MMN @Tropylium I have heard people use the verb rinnastaa in ways which could be translated as "contrast" into English, although such usage is rare and probably non-standard. I added the Kotus-sense and a usex to both. Plese take a look and comment. I don't have a strong opinion about the "contrast" -sense, though. --Hekaheka (talk) 18:00, 20 August 2017 (UTC)
