Middle English broun (the color brown from 13th century) < Old English brūn (dark, shining) < Proto-Germanic *brunaz < Proto-Indo-European *bher- (shining, brown). Cognates include Danish bruin, Icelandic brnn, Swedish brun, German braun, Lithuanian brunas, beras, Sanskrit babhru, and Medieval Latin brunus, Spanish bruno, French brun.
