From Proto-Germanic *furibeudaną, equivalent to for- +‎ bēodan. Cognate with Old High German firbiotan (German verbieten), Gothic 𐍆𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌱𐌹𐌿𐌳𐌰𐌽 (faurbiudan).
