Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Proto-Slavic *tapľati (< *tapjati), iterative and frequentative formed from Proto-Slavic *topiti (“to drown”) with the suffix *-ati. One of the few native words keeping the epenthetic *ľ after a iotated labial, doublet of forms without it like wytapiać, zatapiać, przetapiać.
