From Middle Chinese (MC tsyuX, “master; owner”). Cognate with Thai เจ้า (jâao), ᦈᧁᧉ (ṫsaw²), Tai Dam ꪹꪊ꫁ꪱ, Shan ၸဝ်ႈ (tsāo), Ahom 𑜋𑜈𑜫 (chaw) or 𑜋𑜨𑜧 (chow).
