Glyph origin[edit]
Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *ɡʷaːʔ) : semantic 水 (“water”) + phonetic 扈 (OC *ɡʷaːʔ).
Etymology[edit]
Probably a derivation from 互 (OC *ɡaːs, “intertwining”) (Schuessler, 2007). 扈 (OC *ɡʷaːʔ, “to stop; to prevent”) may be the same word (ibid.).
