Etymology[edit]
- Sakyamuni
Calque of Sanskrit शाक्यमुनि (Śākyamuni, “sage of the Śākyas”), where शाक्य (Śākya) is read as a derivation of शक् (śak, “capable, to be able”). Displaced by the transliteration 釋迦牟尼/释迦牟尼 (Shìjiāmóuní) in later translations.
