Etymology 1[edit]

Unknown.

Wu (2002) proposes that this is a corruption of 麻欄麻栏, name for the traditional dwelling houses of the ethnic minorities (where lovers stay when dating), possibly influenced by 馬郎婦马郎妇 (Mǎlángfù, “wife of Ma-lang, a manifestation of the bodhisattva Guanyin”).
