"Birth" and "natural characteristic / endowments" are semantically connected, compare (OC *sʰleːŋ, *sreŋs, “live, give birth”) and its derivative (OC *sleŋs, “nature; character; personality; quality”) & (OC *sleŋs, “family name”).
