Earliest extant attestation is in the Yuan dynasty's zaju play Mister Yang Donglai critiques Journey to the West (楊東來先生批評西游記) by Yang Jingxian (楊景賢); it was initially the epithet of the elder brother of Sun Wukong, whose epithet was instead 通天大聖通天大圣 (Tōngtiān Dàshèng, “The Great Sage Reaching Heaven”):

Sun Wukong would later be titled 齊天大聖 (“Great Sage, Equal to Heaven”) in Wu Cheng'en's Journey to the West:
